Gold medalist Virender Singh Yadav, also known as Goonga Pehalwan, declared that he will return his Padma Shri Award in protest against the appointment of Sanjay Singh as the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). He joins Bajrang Punia, who already returned his award. Sakshi Malik, a bronze medalist from the 2016 Rio Olympics, also announced her retirement from wrestling due to the same reason.
